In excess of 880 feet in length, this ocean-going fortress was outfitted with nine 16-inch guns in its main turrets. During the closing months of the Second World War, a potentially epic sea battle was averted when attacking US Navy carrier aircraft destroyed the Yamato- Japan's feared super battleship. Denied the opportunity to engage the Yamato, the USS Missouri gained fame on September 2nd, 1945, as representatives of the Imperial Japanese Government signed the Surrender document on the decks of the "Mighty Mo".
